PLAY ZINE

PLAY is a cookbook zine featuring recipes, essays, and artwork from a community of LGBTQ+ chefs, writers, and artists, including Andy Baraghani, Brontez Purnell, Julia Turshen, Rebekah Pepler, Magdalena O’Neal, Jon Kung, Isabel Rower, Tyler Givens, Michelle Hyun Kim, Sarah Stellwag, Preeti Mistry, Telly Justice, Lisa Fernandes, Chala June, Martine Guttierez, Lo Alalay, Meech Boakye, Silver Iocovozzi, Leo Kirts, and Alyssa Nitchun. Its publisher is Metalabel, a new platform for releasing creative work.

Created as a way to celebrate and nourish the queer community, all proceeds from this volume of the zine will go to two mutual aid projects addressing housing and food insecurity among the queer and trans communities: The Okra Project in NYC and Intransitive in Arkansas.

The project is being led by Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Ludwig Hurtado, Senior Editor, Colleen Hamilton, and Creative Director, Gabriella Lewis. The three PLAY leads work in the food and media space and were tired of seeing Pride month stories about "queer food" that don't address the core problem of food insecurity for the most vulnerable among us. They felt it important to center these narratives as an antidote to “corporate pride.” They are all devastated by the ongoing attacks on trans youth— which have led to alarming rates of homelessness and food insecurity—and wanted to tap into the long history of queer mutual aid.

PLAY Zine has been featured in PAPER Magazine and NBC News.
